Sand Casting&Investment Casting: Advantages and Limitations
Sand casting and investment casting are the two most widely used casting processes in the casting industry. What are their process methods and their respective advantages and disadvantages?
Sand casting:
Sand casting is the most popular and simplest type of casting, which has been used for centuries Sand casting is used to manufacture large parts, such as gray iron, ductile iron, stainless steel and other types of steel.
Selection of process parameters

Advantage:
1. Clay is rich in resources and cheap.
2. Short cycle and high work efficiency in mold manufacturing.
3. The mixed molding sand can be used for a long time.
4. Wide adaptability.
Disadvantages and limitations:
1. Low production efficiency;
2. The rigidity of the mold is not high, and the dimensional accuracy of the casting is poor;
3. Castings are prone to defects such as sand flushing, sand inclusion and porosity.
The principle of die casting process is to use high pressure to press molten metal into a precision metal mold cavity at high speed, and the molten metal is cooled and solidified under the pressure to form a casting.

Investment casting:
Investment casting usually refers to a casting scheme in which a pattern is made of fusible materials, a mold shell is made of several layers of refractory materials on the surface of the pattern, and then the pattern is melted and discharged from the mold shell, so as to obtain a mold without parting surface, which can be filled with sand and poured after high-temperature roasting.
Advantage:
1. High dimensional accuracy. Generally ct4-6 (ct10-13 for sand casting and ct5-7 for die casting);
2. The utilization rate of metal materials can be improved.
3. It can maximize the similarity between the blank and the parts and bring great convenience to the structural design of the parts.
4. Not limited by alloy materials.
5. With high production flexibility and strong adaptability, investment casting is suitable for mass production,
Disadvantages and limitations:
The casting size should not be too large, the process is complicated and the casting cooling speed is slow. Investment casting is the most complicated process among all blank forming methods, and the casting cost is also very high. However, if the products are properly selected and the parts are reasonably designed, the high casting cost can be compensated by reducing cutting processing, assembly and saving metal materials, then investment casting has excellent economy.
